What's On

This year, the Kent Miners’ Festival will be held at the Community Park in Betteshanger and from now on. The festival has moved on to pastures new and, with support from Hadlow College along with our other sponsors, this year will be bigger and better.

We will have the usual Heritage Marquees with the history of the Kent Coalfield along with other local interest groups. Performing will be Snowdown Colliery Brass Band, Betteshanger Academy Brass Band, Betteshanger Senior Band, KC’s Dancers and Robb Johnson. Look out for Stupidity with their presentation of ‘Not A Real Horse’. Visit the Performers page for more information.

The Kent Community Coal Queen competion will be an attraction this year. Find more details and an entry form here. There will be stalls and crafts and displays from the Invicta Military Preservation Society and the Invicta Fencing Club to enjoy. Plus the Boxing display and Childrens’ fair rides and inflatables mean there is something for everybody. The ever-popular dog show will take place once more. Visit the dog show page for more details and to enter your dog in advance.

Dover Community Radio will be entertaining us all day and remember admission is FREE! Free parking is available on-site or, if you are coming from Deal, ride on the special festival bus service. Plan your journey details here.

DMAG Drawing Event

KMFDrawingEventPOSTER_7Local artist Louisa Love will be holding a WW1-inspired community drawing event at this year’s Festival. Join in with helping to create a large WW1-inspired commemorative community drawing that will be displayed at Aylesham Heritage Centre.

Taking inspiration from photographs and stories which Louisa has collated through her research into the local and national coalfield history whilst working with Aylesham Heritage Centre on Dover Arts Development’s ‘Joined Up’ project, the drawing activity will be a unique interpretation on the experiences and processes endured by miners during WW1.

Participants are also invited to experiment with creating their own smaller drawings, which could be featured on the construction hoardings of the new Kent Mining Museum at Betteshanger. It is a free drop-in event running 10am – 4pm and all materials will be provided. All abilities are welcome though participation in creating the community drawing is best suited to those age 7+.

This is a DMAG (Dover Museums & Arts Group) and Big Draw event organised as part of Dover Arts Development’s Joined Up project, which connects contemporary artists with museums and heritage sites through WW1-related history.
